BALTHAZAR ENTERTAINMENT

Music videos serve many purposes. Ever since their inception in the early eighties, these visual accompaniments can be simple choreography, short films, abstract artistry, or live performances. The last of those is the route that Belgian band Balthazar have taken for their newest single ‘Entertainment’; however, the video has a dual purpose. One reason is to release this groovy number, and another is to introduce new band member Tijs Delbeke. If anyone caught our List Pick of Balthazar’s ‘Fever’, you’ll know that the outfit re-emerged from a hiatus recently with a new band formation, although still keeping central songwriters Maarten Devoldere and Jinte Deprez. It’s Devoldere who steps to the fore to explain this latest single: "'Entertainment' was written at the end of the album recordings as one of the last songs, functioning as the loose uplifting tune celebrating a carefree take in an entertainment business. We wrote an ambitious album but tried not to take ourselves too seriously, sure it's an outspoken singalong chorus, but there's a rambling playfulness to it which we love." It’s this high-quality, but not too serious, attitude that comes across in the video. The song itself is equally playful, drawing on Madchester styles of Happy Mondays or Inspiral Carpets, mixed in with film soundtrack drama, singalong lyrics, danceable rhythms and art-jazz tendencies that are key to any Balthazar track. The band have also announced details for their next album, Fever, to be release on January 25th, 2019 on Play It Again Sam. Check out ‘Entertainment’ now. - Hannah Thacker
